Pickle Asparagus for your Cocktails

Start the 2015 harvest season off right with a workshop on pickling Asparagus, and learn spice combinations that are best suited for pickles used in cocktails.

This precious and regal vegetable makes a perfect pickled accompaniment to a Caesar or Bloody Mary – the long and slender spear goes well in most glassware.

Join Natalie from East Van Jam / Homesteading Mamas as she takes you through the basics of canning, while you also get to produce your own jar of these venerable pickles to take home. Recipe card for the best ever Caesar is included!

Pickled Carrots to your Preference – Monday Feb 23rd 6-9pm

Monday night’s workshop held at the beautiful shop Studio 126 in Chinatown is an opportunity to play with pickling recipes while maintaining a safe and shelf stable outcome.

We will cover all the basics of why canning works and what keeps us safe while enjoying the freedom of playing around with flavour combinations for carrot pickles.

Canning is the perfect thing to do when it’s cold and rainy out… except fresh, local produce is harder to find! Join us in this pre-holiday canning workshop as we shake out the winter doldrums and work through a seasonally-approriate recipe (spicy cranberry jelly) that will please your holiday guests and get you looking forward to preserving next summer’s produce.

Full instruction on canning techniques, safety, and recipe design through the vehicle of this winter jelly provided. Through this recipe, the door to a world of canning and gift-canning opens before you!

$35 covers materials, instruction, and gets you some delicious jam to take home.

Home Canning – Tomatoes

Description: Explore the world of putting up food in jars! Natalie of Homesteading Mamas returns with this hands-on introduction to hot water bath canning, a technique suitable for low-risk foods like the tomatoes we’ll prepare in this workshop. You’ll learn tips for selecting and preparing ingredients, packing jars, tools and techniques for safely completing projects at home. Put up tomatoes in their peak of ripeness to enjoy all winter. In so doing, you’ll gain transferrable skills to make delicious jams, jellies, and pickles with fresh produce. No experience is necessary. All materials and supplies are included and you will leave with inspiration and a jar of tomatoes preserved during the workshop. $35 registration here
